Appeals, Complex Civil Litigation, and Government Relations
We represent government and non-profit clients when the path forward demands experience, precision, and resolve.
About the Firm
Culper Law was founded to work with the organizations that shape public policy: states, non-profits, and advocacy groups navigating government investigations and high-stakes appeals.
Our attorneys bring deep experience at the intersection of law and public policy. We understand the high stakes that our clients face and the importance of the trust they place in us when selecting us to handle a matter.
We believe the best legal outcomes come from preparation, conviction, and maximizing credibility with the decisionmaker. We strive to apply these principles to every matter we take on.
Our philosophy is to understand the client's objectives, the legal landscape, and key areas of factual development, so that we can develop a strategy that efficiently focuses resources with an eye to the ultimate goal—whether that is trial, appeal, or enacting legislation.
We take on matters we believe in and advocate with the full weight of our expertise.
Whenever presenting a client's case or position, we work to maximize credibility with the decisionmaker. This means addressing the hard parts of the case or matter head on and providing clear and persuasive argument for our client's position.
What We Do
Culper attorneys have extensive experience in strategy and litigation over appeals. They have led appellate sections of federal and state prosecutors' offices; have briefed and argued cases at the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Courts of Appeal, and state supreme courts; led confirmation processes for federal judges; and clerked for judges who sit on U.S. Courts of Appeal. This experience gives them valuable insight into crafting winning appellate strategies and filing persuasive briefs that advance key issues for government and non-profit clients.
Culper attorneys have particular experience at the intersection of government enforcement and complex civil litigation, having led and worked on some of the most complex and successful civil enforcement actions by state attorneys general in recent years, particularly in the areas of consumer protection and antitrust. These notable cases include an $85 million settlement with a large tech company over location tracking, a $575 million settlement on behalf of all 50 states with a large bank over unauthorized account opening, and a $40 million settlement with a large automaker over environmental deception.
Culper attorneys have experience in state and local government relations, particularly in the areas of legislation and regulation involving legally technical subjects such as First Amendment, federal preemption, and securities and financial regulation. Culper attorneys leverage their background and experience as appellate litigators and in leadership in government to advise on legislation and regulations on important issues when surviving legal challenges is a key part of the strategy.
